The story behind the Breakfast Martini Cocktail

The History of the Cocktail

Salvatore Calabrese a bartender at the Library bar in Lanesborough Hotel in London, invented this cocktail in 1996. The invention was inspired by his wife’s recipe for orange marmalade. After having a slice for breakfast at home, the bitter, tangy flavor of the marmalade played with his taste buds. This experience made him take some marmalade to work to experiment.

He started the experiment with his friend, and after a few tastings, they found the product delicious. After branding it the breakfast martini cocktail, he enlisted it to the bar menu. Since it was unique and unusual, it attracted customers’ interest within a short time.

The ingredients of the Breakfast martini

The cocktail is made from about four ingredients;

Gin is the primary alcohol. The commonly used amount is 50mls or two shots

Marmalade; is a special jam used to bring a bittersweet taste to the cocktail. One tablespoon is the standard ratio used

Cointreau; adds liveliness to the cocktail. About 18.75ml or ¾ shot is enough

Lemon juice; lend the Cocktail freshness. The exact amount used in Cointreau is ok

Conclusion

The success of the breakfast martini was attributed by the use of the marmalade jam from Salvatore’s wife recipe.
